Are You Able to Solve It? The Forgotten Netherlands Invention Which Forged the Modern Globe

There are many contenders to claim the title of “planet’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The printing press. The steam engine.

As per a new book, however, that honor should go to the mechanised sawmill conceived by Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.

“Before mechanised sawing, constructing a simple trading ship necessitated around ten sawyers laboring over three months,” notes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-driven sawmills, an identical quantity of cut lumber might be manufactured within a week.”

Thanks to this rapid automated saw, which converted timber to boards using virtually no manual labor, the Dutch were able to build vessels faster than any other nation, which unleashed a century of Dutch maritime, financial as well as cultural dominance in Europe and the globe.

The Original Genuine Industrial Machine

Corneliszoon’s sawmill, argues the writer, represented “mankind’s initial authentic factory apparatus.” A windmill rotated a gear. A single part transformed its circular movement to up-and-down motion to power the saw. A separate mechanism changed the spinning motion into a lateral motion feeding the timber toward the cutter. A ratchet system moved the log ahead one precise increment per stroke.

“Each element seemed simple by itself. Corneliszoon’s genius lay in how to combine them so they acted in a perfectly controlled sequence, cutting on every downward stroke while moving on every upward stroke. It was an astonishingly clever application of basic components.”

Which leads us to today’s puzzle. I’d like you to reimagine a key the fundamental concepts behind Corneliszoon’s machine.

Circular to Vertical

Design a machine which converts rotary motion to up-and-down action. You have these components exclusively: A spinning wheel. Two pegs. Two rods. A “sleeve”, that is a tube or sleeve through which a single the rods can slide snugly. (Assume it is possible to put things on a base, so that the parts do not collapse.)

I’ll be back later today UK featuring the answer.

In the interim, PLEASE NO HINTS. Instead, please propose (non obvious) candidates as the world’s most impactful creation.
