“That was unfortunate. It was essentially an interaction with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the signal was entirely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the incorrect digit,” he remarked. “The action was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”
Historical Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been fined for misconduct. Recent examples include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in early 2024.
- Then Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
